diy holiday gift wrap

Materials

• craft paper, butcher paper or banner paper
• acrylic craft paints
• glitter
• paintbrushes
• plastic stencil sheets
• x-acto knife
• permanent marker
• pencil with eraser
• plastic cups for mixing paints
• extra “drop-cloth” paper
• scissors
• template for patterns

Instructions

1. Print stencil motifs.

2. Lay stencil sheet over printout and trace each motif individually with a marker. Be sure to separate and arrange motifs so that there is at least a 1/2″ border around each one.

3. Using the x-acto knife, cut each motif away from sheet. Be sure to cut on the outer edge of the tracing. Once they are all cut out, then cut apart using scissors.

4. Roll out the paper to fit your table’s length. If your roll wants to roll-up, slip a long ribbon or string through the center and then tie it into a bow and slip over the back of a dining chair. Weigh down the cut end of the paper to keep it from shifting or rolling.

5. Starting with your smallest motif (for example, the pencil eraser), make a scattered repeat pattern, placing them further apart at first. Simply dip the eraser into the paint and then stamp it onto the gift wrap.

6. Using medium to large motifs, begin to fill in “holes” or bare spaces. When using a stencil, be sure to use a stiff-bristled brush and to stipple the paint using fast up-and-down movements, while firmly holding the stencil in place.

7. After filling in the bare spaces with larger motifs, revisit with smaller motifs to fill more holes.

8. Glitter your paper! Using the acrylic paint as an adhesive, stencil the paint on and cover with glitter. Allow to sit and dry for at least five minutes before disturbing the excess glitter. To clean, use a softer brush like a broom to sweep excess glitter off of the paper.

9. Using a smaller brush, finish with small details or corrections! (For the mushroom details, the end of a smaller paintbrush works best.)
10. Allow the paper to dry for approximately 30 minutes to an hour before rolling it up carefully and securely. Then tie it with a ribbon to keep it from unraveling so that when gift giving comes around a few weeks later, you are ready to wrap!

I am definitely making this!  Maybe a little too excited about it.  After doing some research, the paper bouquet holders are a little difficult to find.  I am improvise with doilies.  I'll be sure to post pictures.  Another idea... I think when the holidays are over I will hang it one of my girl's bedrooms.

What You Need:

• 24-inch wreath form
• 30-inch wreath form
• 24-gauge wire
• White spray paint
• 20-foot strand of white holiday lights
• Scissors
• Paper bouquet holders (try ten 8.8-inch ones, twenty 6.4-inch ones, twenty 4.8-inch ones, and fifty 3.2-inch ones from germanplaza.com)

Directions:

Step 1
Working on a covered surface, lay a 24-inch wreath form inside a 30-inch one. Attach them with 24-gauge wire at 6 to 8 evenly spaced points.

Step 2
In a ventilated area, coat combined wreath form with white spray paint. Let dry.

Step 3
Wrap wreath form with a 20-foot strand of white holiday lights (test lights beforehand), leaving the plug end unwrapped (as much as is needed to plug in).

Step 4
With scissors, widen the center-hole slits slightly in paper bouquet holders (we used 10 8.8-inch ones, 20 6.4-inch ones, 20 4.8-inch ones, and 50 3.2-inch ones). Poke a finger through center hole of each bouquet holder (from front to back) to create openings large enough to accommodate a light bulb.

Step 5
Beginning with largest ones, place bouquet holders evenly around wreath, slipping a light through each hole so that bulb bases, not bulbs, rest against paper. (From time to time, hang wreath, and step back to ensure that the arrangement is balanced and attractive.)

Step 6
Add remaining bouquet holders in descending size order. Use smallest bouquet holders to cover centers of larger ones and to fill in any gaps. Hang near an outlet. Unplug when unattended.
